Dental Diet and Tooth Decay
Some would say that “You are what you eat”. Here at our Katy dental practice, we would like to modify it to now read—“your teeth are what you eat”! By and large, the food and drinks you consume play a very large role in the state of your oral health.
Food affects the health of your teeth and gums through the following:
• the frequency of your consumption of sugary and/or acidic foods and beverages
• the nutritional content of your food
• how you combine the foods you eat and the order in which you eat them
• the form and consistency of the food — sticky, liquid, solid, or slow to dissolve
What to Eat in Order to Have Healthy Teeth and Gums- in other words- have a good dental diet
The following food items and groups have been shown to significantly help in the promotion of healthy teeth and gums and should be added to your dental diet:
• Cheese. Aside from its high calcium content, cheese has the ability to neutralize the acid content in your mouth. The lower the acid content, the lesser the risks of cavity-causing bacteria.
• Raw or crisp vegetables and fruits could also help clean plaque in the surface area of your teeth and freshen breath. These may include foods such as apples, carrots, celery and cucumber.
• Apart from cheese, dairy products are good for your teeth due to their high calcium and vitamin D content.
• Choose fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, which could help maintain optimum gum health.
• Choose high-quality protein sources from legumes, lean meat, eggs, and peas.
