End of Summer Back to School Checklist for Katy Families

back to school checklist post

Summer in Katy has been good to your family. Late nights, pool days, vacations, and zero alarm clocks. But with Katy ISD heading back to school, it is time to shift gears and get everyone ready for the routines, early mornings, and full schedules that come with a new school year. We put together this simple end of summer checklist to help Katy families make sure nothing gets missed before the first bell rings.

Schedule Your Child’s Dental Checkup

This is the one most families forget until it is too late. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends dental visits every six months, and the stretch between summer and fall is one of the most important windows to get in. Summer brings popsicles, sports drinks, irregular brushing schedules, and late night snacking… all things that can quietly lead to cavities. A back to school dental visit lets your dentist catch anything summer left behind, apply fluoride to strengthen enamel, and make sure your child’s teeth are developing on track. Book now because August fills up fast. By September, after school slots are the first to disappear.

Restock the Bathroom

Check every child’s toothbrush. If it has been more than three months or the bristles are frayed, replace it. Let kids pick their own color or character ; it actually works as a small motivator. Stock up on fluoride toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash appropriate for their age.

Reset Sleep Schedules Now

If your kids have been staying up late and sleeping in all summer, do not wait until the night before school starts to fix it. Shift bedtime and wake time earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days starting this week. A gradual reset is far easier on everyone than a sudden jolt back to 6am.

Schedule a Back to School Physical

Most schools and sports programs require an updated physical on file. Call your pediatrician now rather than the week before school when every other Katy parent is doing the same thing. Many offices in Cinco Ranch, Seven Meadows, and Falcon Landing book out quickly in August.

Stock Up on School Supplies Early

Katy Mills and local stores along Kingsland Boulevard start running low on supplies fast once August hits. Tackle the school supply list early in the week so you are not hunting for specific notebooks or folders the night before orientation.

Review Medication and Health Plans

If your child takes daily medication or has a health condition their school needs to know about, update those forms now. Check expiration dates on any medications, EpiPens, or inhalers that travel with your child.

Establish a Morning Routine

A chaotic morning sets a bad tone for the whole day. Spend one evening this week mapping out a realistic morning routine for each child, including time to eat breakfast, brush teeth properly, and get out the door without rushing. Prep backpacks and lay out clothes the night before whenever possible.

Talk to Your Kids About the New Year

New grade, new teachers, maybe a new school. Take a few minutes this week to talk with your children about what they are excited about and what is making them nervous. A little conversation now can make a big difference on day one.

Check Vision and Hearing

If your child has been squinting at screens or asking you to repeat yourself more than usual, a quick vision or hearing check before school starts is worth the time. Undetected vision or hearing issues are one of the leading causes of classroom struggles that get mistaken for other problems.

Book That Dental Appointment

We mentioned it first and we are mentioning it again because it is genuinely the item most likely to fall off the list. Children lose more than 51 million school hours every year to dental pain and problems, and nearly all of it is preventable with a routine checkup. If your family has not been in to see us since spring, now is the perfect time.
